1. Colorful Collages

Post-It Notes are available in a whole host of colors, making them ideal for vibrant collages. Begin with one note and sketch a small figure or object. Once you're satisfied, attach it to a larger sheet of paper. From there, let your imagination run wild!

Draw additional pieces on separate notes and position them around the original. You might create a lively sunset landscape featuring warm oranges and striking purples or a bustling city scene filled with diverse characters enjoying their day.

Besides the burst of color, collages give you the freedom to experiment without committing to a large canvas. You can easily rearrange notes or swap them out until everything looks just right. This method not only sparks creativity but also encourages playful exploration.

Did you catch Jack Viant's show in PS1? That's a great example of how you can let the pages dictate the drawings - check out his Instagram here.

2. Doodle Series Challenge

Using Post-It Notes for a doodle series challenge can be both entertaining and liberating! Gather several notes and set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, draw as many quick sketches as you can on the notes. Your doodles could be playful animals, whimsical characters, or even abstract shapes. Get your friends involved and have a competition to see who can draw the most, or the funniest character!

When you're done, look at how these doodles might connect. Do any tell a story or form a scene when placed together? This challenge not only provides multiple starting points but also lowers your pressure, as the focus is on fun rather than perfection!

3. Story Cubes with Post-Its

If you love storytelling, turn your Post-It Notes into story cubes! Write different prompts or words on various notes. Mix it up with characters (like a knight or a robot) and themes (such as friendship or adventure).

To use your story cubes, randomly select a few notes and incorporate those elements into your next drawing. This approach not only encourages creative thinking but may also lead to unexpected combinations. For instance, what happens when your knight embarks on a friendship journey with a quirky robot?

4. Character Mashup Madness

It can be hard to choose a single character or subject to draw. With Post-It Notes, you can easily mix and match! Draw various character parts—like heads, bodies, and accessories—on separate notes.

After you’ve created a set of options, shuffle them to see what new character combinations you can create. Imagine a wizard with roller-skate legs or a pirate wearing a butterfly costume! This playful exercise can spark fresh ideas for your next drawing session, resulting in wonderfully unique creations. This is another great option to do with a group of people!

5. Pixel Power

Put the pens away and just use post-its! Take each post it note as one pixel and build up some designs. You could look at some old 8-bit video game characters for inspiration. The great news is you can mix and match countless times you don't have to commit like you do with a sharpie so this is a great way to get back into creating slowly!

Next time you feel stuck, reach for a stack of Post-It Notes, and let your creativity flow in exciting new directions. Enjoy experimenting, and most importantly, have fun drawing!
